Soaring Above Valkeakoski – A Summer Farewell from the Skies

Small towns with beautiful nature are among the most perfect places to visit on a summer evening in Finland. 40 minutes away and with some gorgeous back-roads with natural landscape from Tampere, is Valkeakoski. Today we soar above the charming Finnish town of Valkeakoski during the last golden days of summer. The sunlight still lingers a bit longer. Everything feels calm, quiet, and beautifully alive. This all-drone short showcases the town’s heart. It features the iconic Valkeakoski Church and the Rapola Bridge. The soft reflections of late-summer skies glow over the canals that connect the lakes.

Valkeakoski literally means “White Rapids”. It is a perfect name for a city built between two lakes — Mallasvesi and Vanajavesi. In Valkeakoski, water is part of everyday life. It’s a peaceful place about 35 km south of Tampere. Around 20,000 people live here. The city was once known for its paper mills and strong industrial roots. Today it’s more relaxed. It is filled with green parks and lovely lakes.

The Valkeakoski Church (Valkeakosken kirkko) is one of the town’s most recognizable landmarks. It stands right by the water in the city center, surrounded by trees and open sky — a perfect symbol of the area’s calm and closeness to nature.

The church was designed by famous Finnish architect Pauli E. Blomstedt and completed in 1969, replacing an older wooden church that had served the community earlier. Its modernist design is simple but striking — light concrete walls, tall narrow windows, and a tower that points cleanly toward the sky. Inside, the atmosphere is warm and peaceful, with natural light pouring in and minimal decoration focusing attention on the altar and organ.
